A luxury bed and breakfast in North Devon, Little Silver is beautifully situated overlooking the river in High Bickington, Umberleigh. Originally built for Captain and Mrs Barton and their 20-plus staff in the 1890s, this magnificent stone house faces southeast, taking advantage of the far-reaching views over the valley and the River Taw.
Inside
- Style: Decadent luxury: four-poster beds and open fires, with sumptuous hand picked furnishings
- Bedrooms: Three beautifully finished bedrooms with crisp linen and fluffy towels: 2 four-poster doubles overlooking the valley and one twin/large double with views over the garden.
- Bathrooms: Both four-poster rooms have en suite bathrooms. The twin room is ideal for children or for parties happy to share a bathroom.
- For relaxation: Sink into a comfortable sofa by the open fire, or watch the world go by from the large bay window in the drawing room.
- For recreation: Stroll in the gardens, play tennis, croquet or go fishing (the latter by arrangement)
Outside
Extensive Victorian-style gardens with a folly, pond, tennis court, croquet lawn and a new orchard planted with traditional varieties of apples, plums and damsons. Enjoy stunning views of the North Devon countryside on a local walk recommended by your hosts.

About Your Hosts
Bill and Paula lived on a 70 year old Tahiti Ketch on the Med. for four years before coming home to reality, so sailing features highly on their list of interests. They have lived in a number of countries around the world, which is reflected in the things they have collected. Both are very practical and between them, enjoy photography, history, fishing, riding and interior design. They are always happy to give advice on what to do and see locally.
Out and About
- Hartland Abbey, Arlington Court and Castle Drogo are within easy reach.
- Great Torrington, South Molton and Barnstaple are just 20 minutes away, whilst the wonderful private village of Clovelly is a 45-minute drive.
- Fishing, walking, riding, surfing and shooting can all be arranged locally, as can visits to the wonderful wildlife reserve of Lundy Island.
- Visit RHS Rosemoor (20 minutes), the sea at Instow (25 minutes) or Exmoor and Dartmoor (45 minutes).
- Brass rubbing is available at Lynmouth.

Getting there
- On the map: The property is situated between Umberleigh and High Bickington, North Devon, overlooking the River Taw.
- By car: The property is about three and a half to four hours from London, and about an hour and a quarter from Exeter airport (pick-ups can be arrange from the airport). Barnstaple is about 20 minutes away.
- By train: The nearest station is Umberleigh, a request stop five minutes from the house that connects to the main line from London, the north and Exeter (pick-ups can be arranged).
- Helipad: No but light aircraft and helicopters can land at Eaglescott Airfield, just a few minutes from the house.
